What is IPL Photorejuvenation?

IPL photorejuvenation is a non-invasive procedure that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to erase the signs of ageing from your entire face, neck and décolletage in each treatment session. The result is a smooth and revitalised skin appearance. IPL can also treat spots, discoloured areas and other telltale signs of ageing on your hands and most other body areas.

How does IPL work?

IPL delivers a wide spectrum of multiple wavelengths of light energy, targeting a number of different skin structures simultaneously and enabling minimisation of small red blood vessels and pigmentation irregularities in the skin (usually caused by sun damage).

Once the IPL handpiece is placed over the treatment area, a button is depressed and a bright flash of light is released. This light is absorbed by the target area, whether it is a sunspot or broken capillary. The appearance of the treated area immediately after the session will vary from person to person. The after effects are usually minor and may include some redness and deepening of pigmentation. Most people are able to return to normal activity immediately.

By using a large spectrum multiple wavelength light beam (unlike lasers which use just one wavelength) IPL is able to provide superior reduction of age spots and uneven skin pigmentation, collagen regeneration and blood vessels destruction.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes, IPL is extremely safe in the hands of an experienced therapist. The IPL system is able to deliver energy (or heat) to the skin in a gentle way, unlike laser. The IPL handpiece has a refrigerated cooling system built in so that it actually cools the skin during the treatment, allowing for maximum penetrating and protection.

What Does IPL Photorejuvenation Treat?

Skin conditions that may benefit from IPL Photorejuvenation include:
  • Fine lines
  • Red blemishes
  • Mottled colouration
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Rosacea
  • Pigment discolouration - freckles and age spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Coarse or rough skin
  • Loss of skin tone and elasticity
  • General sun damage
  • Pre-cancerous lesions
  • Benign lesions

Does it hurt?

No. IPL treatments do not hurt, although sometimes there is a burning sensation (like mild sunburn) for a few hours after treatment.

How many IPL treatments will I need and how often?

A fully comprehensive consultation with a Melbourne Cosmetic Group nurse should be completed before undergoing any IPL photorejuvenation treatments. Typically, a series of four to six IPL treatments may be recommended at four-week intervals. Generally there is minimal to no downtime with IPL photorejuvenation. You can return to work and resume all normal activities following your treatment. Follow-up treatments may be desired once a year to maintain results.

Who is suitable for IPL Photorejuvenation treatment?

Any woman or man who shows signs of aged or sun-damaged skin is a candidate for IPL photorejuvenation treatments. IPL photorejuvenation cannot be performed during pregnancy or lactation, nor can it be done on recently sun-tanned or sun over-exposed skin. After treatment clients will need to avoid sun exposure and use a sun-blocking agent for several months.
