Birthmarks are skin discolourations that affect millions of people all over the world. Most are present at birth while others appear soon afterwards. For many people they are pleasant reminder of who they are, but for others they are socially embarrassing and can adversely affect one's confidence and self esteem.
Generally they are harmless and not considered to be a medical problem - however, for a small proportion of people they pose a significant cosmetic problem and for others they are an unsightly nuisance that would benefit from cosmetic intervention.
There are many types of Birthmarks:
- Moles, also known as Pigmented Nevi, are rarely present at birth, developing instead throughout childhood and adolescence. Moles in newborns are typically somewhat larger than in adults, and they have the potential to become cancerous, so removal is sometimes recommended.
- Port Wine Stains and Haemangiomas are vascular birthmarks that appear as flat, red or purple discolorations caused by overgrowth of tiny blood vessels in the skin. They are present at birth, usually appearing on the face or limbs, and they grow along with the child rather than fading. Prominent or disfiguring Port Wine Stains can be removed with laser/IPL treatment.
- Café au Lait Spots are birthmarks that look like flat patches of tan to brown-pigmented skin, which are permanent and can occur anywhere on the body.
Treatment options:
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and Laser can be used to treat certain vascular birthmarks, while IPL can be used to treat some of the pigmentation associated with brown birthmarks.
