Nobody wants to look older than they actually are! Ageing is an inevitable part of life.
Premature ageing is preventable!
The best thing you can do to slow down the inevitable appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, smoker's lines, dark circles, crow's feet, age spots, pigmentation, broken capillaries, skin cancers, weathered skin, is to start the prevention process early - like yesterday!
There are many options available to help with the prevention and treatment of premature ageing. A variety of procedures and advice offered at Melbourne Cosmetic Group can help you to look and feel younger in a natural, non-invasive way, improving what you have rather than changing who you are.
Not sure whether you're starting to show signs of premature ageing? Why not compare 'exposed' areas of your body (face, neck or hands) with 'non- or rarely- exposed' areas (buttock, breast or tummy)? See any differences?

15 easy first steps towards halting premature ageing
- Use Broad-spectrum Sun Protection: Never let your skin burn. Sunscreen protection is mandatory, it is estimated that up to 90% of facial ageing is due to the damaging effects of ultra-violet radiation. Even if you don't plan to be in the sun, use a broad-spectrum sun block everyday. It screens out both UVA and UVB rays, because surprisingly, harmful sunrays penetrate through fog, clouds and even glass windows. Also, don't forget your sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing.
- Use Medical Skin Care Treatments: A variety of non-surgical surface-repair treatments are available to repair sun-damaged skin, enhance the skins' appearance by giving it a smoother, fresher look but they won't remove wrinkles or deep scars.
- Consider a Cosmeceutical Skin Care Program: The face is the most exposed part of the body, vulnerable to radiation rays on a daily basis. It is therefore important to invest in skin care routines that actually help undo some of the damage that contributes to the premature ageing of the skin. Cosmeceuticals are non-prescription, bioactive ingredients which are considered scientifically reliable and potent. Cosmeceutical skin care generally contains the highest concentrations of active ingredients used in skin rejuvenation and must be purchased from medical clinics where your skin is thoroughly assessed and your skin care treatment planned prior to product purchase.
- Try Retinoic Acid: A prescription cream known as Retin A®, which has been shown to stimulate collagen and elastin production, and control abnormal pigmentation in the skin when used in a sufficiently high concentration over a sustained period of time. Retin-A® can actually reverse some signs of ageing in the skin.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation Treatments: IPL photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that simultaneously eliminates the signs of premature ageing while restoring a youthful smoothness with high satisfaction. IPL erases skin damage, refreshes the treated skin, whilst achieving noticeable but subtle results, over several treatment sessions, allowing you to return to work without severe discomfort. From rosacea, fine lines, age spots and broken capillaries to enlarged pores, coarse skin and mottled pigmentation, IPL photorejuvenation is the answer.
- Take Advantage of Anti-Wrinkle Injectables: Anti-wrinkle treatments that relax wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoother, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. This is a simple, minimally non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that delivers dramatic results with no downtime. It is especially useful between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead.
- Facial Line Fillers and Contouring Injectables: In general, injectable fillers can be used to enhance facial features and smooth out some of the premature lines and wrinkles, resultant of too much sun damage, with virtually no downtime. A variety of products are available on the market now, and depending on the specific problem and area, a filler product can be matched to your facial requirements and expectations.
- Don't Smoke : Nicotine use (in any form) contributes to the breakdown of elastin and collagen causing changes in skin texture and elasticity. Smoking creates lines around the mouth from pursing your lips around the cigarette. If you want to look your best, you must not smoke. In addition, smoking impairs the body's healing capacity.
- Drink Enough Water : Drink at least two litres (eight glasses) of caffeine-free, alcohol-free liquids every day (preferably water). Water is necessary for healthy cell formation and hydration as well as the removal of waste products. If you exercise, are in warm weather, or ingest a lot of salt, you will need to drink more than 2 litres.
- Balance Your Nutrition : A diet that is well-rounded and emphasizes fruits and vegetables, lean meats and fish, and moderate amounts of starches or carbohydrates will keep you fit and looking your best.
- Take Anti-oxidant Supplements : Anti-oxidant supplements such as zinc and vitamins, A, C and E contribute to the body's ability to fight free-radical damage. Free-radical damage, caused by smoking, pollution, and inflammation, can lead to premature ageing as well as cancer. Recent research suggests that certain forms of anti-oxidants can also be applied directly to the skin for targeted absorption.
- Manage Your Weight : Fluctuations in weight or being overweight for long periods of time stress the elasticity of the skin. Being significantly underweight may contribute to ageing by malnutrition (see #10 above).
- Exercise Regularly : Exercise increases circulation, bringing fresh nutrients and oxygen to skin cells and boosts anti-ageing hormones. Working up a sweat at least 40 minutes a day, five days a week helps the body to flush out toxins that make the skin look dull and blotchy. Exercise helps to keep your self esteem high and your spirits up, whilst improving your overall body image.
- Quality Sleep and Proper Sleeping Position : Get eight hours of quality sleep a night. Whilst asleep, not only does the body refresh and regenerate, it also produces greater amounts of growth hormone and the anti-ageing hormone melatonin. Stomach-sleepers frequently develop creases on the forehead and cheeks and often wake up with swelling around the eyes which over time may stretch the delicate eyelid skin. A simple way to prevent line formation and excessive tension on the skin is to sleep on your back.
- Reduce Your Stress : Physical, mental and emotional stress can contribute to premature ageing and worse, serious illness. Stress contributes to changes in hormonal levels, excessive frowning, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, increased tendency to smoke and drink excessive amounts of alcohol, and many other factors. It is important to reduce your stress levels before they show on your face and have a detrimental effect on your health. Find something that helps to reduce your stress level and stick to it!
